SUMMARY OF SOME OF THE QUERIES: Query Example Explanation ================================================================ Single Word hamlet Finds all records which contain the word "hamlet." Phrase "to be or not" Finds all records which contain the exact phrase "to be or not." And king laertes Finds all records which king & laertes contain BOTH "king" and " king and laertes" Or gertrude | closet Finds all records gertrude or closet which contain EITHER "gertrude" or "closet." Not ^ guildenstern Finds all records which not guildenstern DO NOT contain "guildenstern" How to Run a Query? With any file open in the VIP window, click on the Query box located on the left side of the screen. A Query Screen will open and the Cursor will be positioned in the lower box, waiting for you to start typing in words for the query. As an example, type in the name "John". Don't worry about lower or upper case, all query's are lower case. Notice that as you type the name or word, the bottom box on the left hand side of the screen moves to display the list of words that are contained in this file (the last file that was opened or viewed using the VIP software). This list of words can be useful in making sure that you use the correct spelling (old, new ,etc) or some words may have been misspelled in the book or we may have made a mistake while transcribing the books. After John you want a space and the name "Brown". A space means "and" or you may use the "&" character between the words or names. John* finds John, John's, Johnsons, etc. At the top of the Query Screen, you will see the name John and a number that represents the number of paragraphs that contain the word John. Just below that you will see the name or word Brown' and a number that represents the number of paragraphs that contain Brown. Then a line that shows the two words or names combined and a number that represents the paragraphs that contain both John and Brown. This might be John Jones and Mary Brown. To get just John Brown, Use Quotes around the words: "John Brown". This will find just those paragraphs that contain John Brown. This will not find "John M. Brown", or "John Melvin Brown". A more complete query can be accomplished by using the "OR" function. Look at the slash key ( \ ) just to the left of the backspace key .The vertical lines just above the slash represent the "OR" function. "John Brown"|"John M. Brown" will find either of the two cases shown; but will not find "John M Brown", (no period after the "M"). Please review the VIP HELP section of this text. And it is a good idea to review the HELP manual "VIPHLP.NFO" located in the "H_BAR" folder. Also try with a hyphen between the numbers when spelled out. Any combination that you may think of should be used. You should also try searching for the names of individuals who were associated with the unit. When running a query, click on "Apply To All" (*) to search all documents that are open. They may only be visible as icons at the bottom of the screen but they will be searched. (*)Please see the section: How to Open more than one Infobase.
